Super Rugby live updates: Unbeaten Waratahs take on Reds

Kellaway goes bang and gets yellow carded

This game is absolutely worthy of Australia’s oldest rivalry, the Waratahs are really not looking intimidated in the forwards and the work from Teddy Wilson has been tidy at halfback.

Lawson Creighton also is looking to make a point at five-eighth after leaving the Reds last year to seek new opportunities in NSW.

Triston Reilly not only has impressed with his try but has made two huge shots. Also something you wouldn’t expect to see Andrew Kellaway absolutely smashing his Wallabies captain Harry Wilson in the tackle.

It then goes beyond horizontal and the drive into the ground is reviewed and the fullback is off with a yellow card.

Kellaway not happy, but by the letter of law, can have few complaints. The initial tackle was incredible, the drive into the ground afterwards could prove costly.

Waratahs fire ahead after just two minutes

The Waratahs have really came out swinging getting a try after just two minutes through Triston Reilly that has stunned the Reds.

It all came from some hard carries from Taniela Tupou and Angus Bell that left the perfect platform for Teddy Wilson to fire the ball his winger.

This is a perfect start from the Waratahs who have really looked physical in Brisbane so far. Dan McKellar has his team nicely fired up.

What will we see from Fraser McReight tonight?

The Wallabies star is fresh off inking a three-year contract extension to remain in Australia, despite lucrative interest from overseas.

His coach Les Kiss has lauded him one of the elite flankers in the world, and against a Waratahs outfit riding high off three-straight wins, he will need to prove it.

Kiss, as a former State of Origin player, loves these interstate rivalries and will no doubt have his squad fired up.

Watch for Taniela Tupou to make an impression up front on his Brisbane homecoming in the blue jumper, particularly given the rev up he’s been given by former teammate Lukhan Salakaia-Loto for daring to wear the colours.

We’re almost at kick off

This is going to be a really interesting match up.

Two front rows packed with Wallabies and it will be interested to see who can get the edge.

I am expecting a big performance from Taniela Tupou at tighthead for the Waratahs against his former friends and teammates in Brisbane.

In the backrow, can the Waratahs nullify the rampant trio of Uru, McReight and Wilson?

Then we get to the backs, the NSW rookie halfback Teddy Wilson with everything to prove against the tried and tested Tate McDermott. Max Jorgensen is showing his world-class credentials on the wing for the Tahs, can Tim Ryan avoid second season syndrome?

All will be answered very soon. Cannot wait.

And the Reds?

It’s an interesting lineup from the Reds, with Sef Fa’agase starting at loosehead prop ahead of former All Black and one cap Wallaby Alex Hodgmam.

As ever, it’s a super strong pack packed with Wallabies, newly signed up with Rugby Australia, hooker Matt Faessler packs down beside tighthead international Zane Nonggorr.

The all Wallaby backrow of Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson and Seru Uru could cause havoc in Brisbane tonight.

Then, in the halves Tom Lynagh and Tate McDermott provide one of the best partnerships in Super Rugby. Also the junkyard dog Tim Ryan squaring off against Max Jorgensen will be well worth the entry price into Suncorp tonight.

Reds (1-15): Sef Fa’agase, Matt Faessler, Zane Nonggorr, Josh Canham, Ryan Smith, Seru Uru, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson, Tate McDermott (c), Tom Lynagh, Tim Ryan, Hunter Paisami, Filipo Daugunu, Lachie Anderson, Heremaia Murray

Replacements: Richie Asiata, Alex Hodgman, Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, Angus Blyth, Joe Brial, Kalani Thomas, Harry McLaughlin-Phillips, Dre Pakeho

How the Waratahs are lining up tonight

We’re not too far away from a decision- who do you want in charge of the Wallabies?

The weather out at Suncorp.

It’s going to cool down considerably tonight at Suncorp, but it’s still steamy enough for both teams to deal with.

There will be a lot of tired bodies by the end of the night. Aren’t we meant to be into autumn?

I have been banned from whinging about the humidity by my colleagues in the sports department. Completely fair feedback.

It would be akin to Australians sooking about rain and grey skies in Belfast.

Second season Blues

Last year, they were champions, this year, the Blues just cannot get a win.

They have just finished up in Hamilton going down 32-31 to the Chiefs, after also losing last weekend by a point to the Brumbies at Eden Park.

The Waratahs face them right at the very end of the season, when we can absolutely expect them to have found some form. But who would have predicted this start?

Son of a Reds gun turning out for the Waratahs tonight

Teddy Wilson starts tonight at halfback for the Waratahs and my esteemed colleague Iain Payten has explained why.

With Waratahs captain Jake Gordon injured, the former Australian schoolboy boxing champion has a rare opportunity to start and relish the opportunity.

It’s not an easy gig for any 9 at the Waratahs, Gordon and Jack Grant are both impressive operators leaving opportunities scarce to get onto the field. Wilson gets his chance tonight in Brisbane and his father David, the former Queensland and Wallabies legend will be watching on.
