‘He’s done’: Griffin on Dragons chopping block as shock promise to young guns revealed

Dragons powerbrokers have reportedly made a huge promise to young guns Tyrell Sloan and Jayden Sullivan — 2023 will be Anthony Griffin’s last year in charge.

Both Sullivan and Sloan requested immediate releases from their respective contracts three weeks ago before the pair had a sudden change of heart.

Sloan, 20, decided to stay at the Red V and fight for his spot after he was dropped by Griffin only three games into the season.

While Sullivan, 21, was assured he is a part of the club’s long term plans after Ben Hunt’s re-signing left him as the Dragons second string halfback once again.

Now it has emerged Dragons powerbrokers were able to change their mind by informing the pair Griffin’s tenure won’t last according to WWOS.

The 56-year-old former Broncos and Panthers boss his under pressure to perform and his star playmaker, Ben Hunt, even revealed if his side don’t start strong Griffin will be axed.

The Dragons have been unable to make the finals in two years under Griffin and his current contract expires at the end of 2023.

However, Griffin may be shown the door by the year’s end according to SMH’s Andrew Webster.

“The first thing they must do is pay out coach Anthony Griffin, who has a year to run on his contract but will struggle to make it to the first day of summer,” Webster wrote.

“Put a fork in poor old Hook – he’s done.”

According to reports, neither Sullivan and Sloan have enjoyed their time under Griffin and the club is reportedly an unhappy environment.

The Dragons club culture has come under fire in recent weeks after only three players attended the end-of-year awards night.

Dragons legend Matt Cooper launched a scathing attack on his former club, claiming there is “no pride in the jersey anymore”.

“It’s disgraceful. It’s terrible, where the club is right now,” Cooper said to The Daily Telegraph.

“From 2001-2011 we only missed the finals twice. Since then, we’ve only made them twice.

“Obviously it changed when Wayne Bennett left. It all starts from the top… that’s where the culture comes from.”
