Chicago name ex-USMNT's Berhalter as head coach

The Chicago Fire on Tuesday named former United States men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter as the MLS club’s new director of football and head coach.

Berhalter, who coached 74 matches for the USMNT, was fired from that role this past July after the team’s poor Copa América showing.

“After a thorough and detailed search that included a number of exceptional candidates, it became clear that Gregg Berhalter was the right choice to lead our sporting operations,” Chicago Fire owner Joe Mansueto said. “His previous success in MLS, where he thrived in a dual role, and his experience leading the U.S. Men’s National Team over the last six years make him an ideal fit for our vision for the Club moving forward.”

Prior to his time with the USMNT, Berhalter coached Hammarby in Sweden and the Columbus Crew.

The Fire, who have a bye week, will play their final match of the MLS regular season against Nashville at Soldier Field on Oct. 19.
