‘One of rugby league’s great clubs’: Broncos secure their new coach

Less than a week since the Brisbane Broncos announced they were parting ways with head coach Kevin Walters, the club has secured a replacement, with Michael Maguire inking a three-year deal.

Maguire guided South Sydney to a premiership in 2014 and will come under pressure to help the Broncos secure their first title since 2006.

Maguire, who has not coached at NRL level since he was axed by Wests Tigers in 2022, has tasted recent success at State of Origin level with New South Wales, and guided New Zealand to the Pacific Championships crown.

He said he wanted fans to be proud of the Broncos and their style of play.

“The Broncos are one of rugby league’s great clubs and it will be an honour to step into the role of head coach,” Maguire said in a statement circulated by the club.

“The Broncos organisation has a high expectation on everything it does. It’s built a great history and shown the strength of what a club can be and what it can mean to fans.

“Playing my part in the great vision of what the Broncos stand for is the exciting part for me.

“We want the members to turn up and be proud of the way we play, proud of their team. I can’t wait to get started in Brisbane.”
