Ross Lyon says he’s “very close” to being named St Kilda coach admitting his “heart’s been opened up” to fall back in love with his old club.
But he’s also questioned the “narrative” around the team, following its shock sacking of Brett Ratten and questions over the club’s leadership, saying it’s “a bit disrespectful”.
The former Saints boss – who’s expected to be confirmed as Ratten’s replacement very shortly – spoke with Nine after days of meetings with team higher-ups and the board.

“We’re very close and giving both parties time to do their ERP, their due diligence and hopefully get across the line in a not-too-distant future,” Lyon said.
“Because things are pointing that way. I’m keen, my heart’s been opened up.”
Dual A-League championship winner and Saints mentor Ernie Merrick described Ratten’s sacking as “one of the worst” he has seen.
Lyon did not go so far as to say he felt sorry for Ratten but said: “It’s been a difficult time for the club and obviously Brett, but we know it’s a brutal industry.
“I’m sort of diving in. We’re very close, progressing, we presented to the board yesterday and had some long meetings, talking about philosophy and really trying to understand where they’re at and what they’re trying to achieve.”
Lyon added: “I don’t like the narrative around St Kilda. Maybe it’s deserved but sometimes it’s a bit disrespectful.
“Hopefully we can get to a point where I can roll up my sleeves and help change that, hopefully.”
