Another World Cup shock! Windies on the brink after being thumped by minnows

Scotland has produced the second T20 World Cup boilover in as many days, stunning the West Indies to threaten their fancied rivals’ hopes of escaping the qualifying group stage.

In a tricky four-team group also including Zimbabwe and Ireland, the West Indies were favoured to finish on top given their historic success in the format as two-time champions.

Yet they followed Sri Lanka’s lead in losing to an associate nation, after the Asian champions fell to Namibia on Sunday.

Scottish opener George Munsey starred with an unbeaten 66 off 53 balls as the underdogs worked their way to a total of 5-160.

In contrast the West Indies never really got going, collapsing from 1-53 to be 8-79. Jason Holder top-scored with 38 and put on some late resistance but they could only reach 118 in 18.3 overs.

The Scots were given 500-1 odds of winning the World Cup pre-tournament and came in ranked 15th in the world, with the West Indies seventh.

The win is arguably the second biggest in Scotland’s cricket history, following their ODI triumph over England in 2018.

Otherwise in terms of Test nations they had only previously beaten Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland and Zimbabwe.
