LISTEN: Where is O’Meara most likely to end up?

Jaeger O’Meara suddenly has two clubs making a bid to get him away from Hawthorn.

On the penultimate trade period special episode of the Real Footy podcast, Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan discuss whether O’Meara is more likely to land at Fremantle or GWS, if he is traded, and how the seed of the Giants’ interest was watered and gained momentum at Stephen Coniglio’s wedding.

Decision between three states looms for O’Meara

By Michael Gleeson and Peter Ryan

Jaeger O’Meara was weighing up a choice in three on Tuesday night between staying at Hawthorn, moving to Greater Western Sydney or moving home to Western Australia after Fremantle came in late, inspired by the Giants’ audacious bid for the contracted veteran midfielder.

While O’Meara was drawn to the idea of a move to GWS and a three-year contract beyond the one year he has left with the Hawks next year, he has had his head turned by the option to move home to Perth.

The Giants are prepared to trade pick 21 for O’Meara (after other deals are completed) while the Dockers have not finalised an offer, with other trades, including Rory Lobb to the Bulldogs, still to be finalised. Dockers ruckman Lloyd Meek told the club on Tuesday that he wanted to be traded to the Hawks.

Dream of being ‘a Pie for life’ ends for Grundy

By Peter Ryan and Michael Gleeson

After being traded to Melbourne for pick 27 with five years remaining on a seven-year deal he signed with Collingwood in 2020, ruckman Brodie Grundy declared he had hoped to be a “Pie for life” when he put pen to paper on that contract.

He said that desire to remain with Collingwood did not change throughout 2022, but it became clear to him when he sat down with the club in recent times “the dream could no longer become a reality”.

Grundy signed the seven-year deal worth just over $6 million with Collingwood at the end of 2019, before he entered his free agency year in 2020, which tied him to the Magpies until the end of 2027.

What’s behind Hawthorn’s great sell-off?

By Jake Niall

In 2022, the first year of Sam Mitchell’s tenure as coach, Hawthorn have been adventurous in both game style and in willingness to jettison experience from their playing ranks.

As of Tuesday evening, it was quite feasible that both Jaeger O’Meara and Tom Mitchell would be following Jack Gunston out the door before the close of trading business. O’Meara was said to be sleeping on his choice of club – Fremantle, Greater Western Sydney, or the less-probable option of staying at Hawthorn.

Mitchell would be Collingwood-bound, provided the Hawks could reach terms with their old list manager and football boss Graham Wright. Usually, when clubs are quibbling about picks between the low 40s and mid or late 20s, an accommodation will be reached.
