Bathurst champion Shane van Gisbergen was forced to abort a live interview on Monday morning, leaving his teammate Garth Tander to complete the interview, as the Supercars star struggled to hold himself together following a wild night of celebrations.
Van Gisbergen, who has dominated the Supercars season and continued his stellar season by claiming his second Bathurst title in three years, had a short and sharp cameo on Nine’s Today Show.
After looking pale as snow, van Gisbergen, wearing a beanie and his Red Bull Ampol jacket, put up his hand, waved goodbye and said “I was here” before quickly removing himself from the interview.
Today host Karl Stefanovic saw the lighter side, saying “I think he’s done”.

His comments came after Tander – the 2007 Supercars champion – opened up by saying “We were quick yesterday but not so fast this morning”.
Later, Tander gave an update on his partner, who was with him during their 2020 success.
“Curled up in the fetal position in a corner somewhere, so I’m not sure we’re going to hear from him any more this morning,” the 45-year-old said.
“It was a big night …. I can’t even talk, that’s how big a night it was.”

Tander, who celebrated his fifth victory, said he had never driven at Bathurst in such poor conditions and added that his success on Sunday was extra special given it was the last time the Holden car would be seen on the Mount Panorama track.
“Obviously, a fantastic day yesterday,” he said.
“All a bit surreal really. Crazy, crazy weather up here all week. Even the rain in the first part of the race, I’ve never driven it here in 25 years, of just these isolated pockets of rain hitting the race track, so it was just crazy at the start. Just surviving the first couple of hours of the race and we had a great car and the team did an awesome job.
“It’s (just a) really, really special one to win given it was Holden Commodore’s last ever start at Mount Panorama, and our sport’s been built on the Ford vs Holden battle since the ’60s so for it to end like that for Holden, it was all a bit surreal.”
