Manly’s brutal Hasler call as club narrows focus on former Broncos head coach

Sea Eagles powerbrokers have reportedly informed Des Hasler he will not be the club’s coach in 2024 and have narrowed their focus on Anthony Seibold.

Hasler’s messy contract negotiations were heavily publicised, but now his long-term future at Manly is reportedly over.

Seibold was employed as defensive coach for the English rugby union team after his ugly split with the Broncos in 2020.

Head coach Eddie Jones backed the 48-year-old to transition back into NRL coaching seamlessly.

“I have no doubt Anthony is ready to hop back into the fire,” Jones said to the SMH.

“He certainly has his mojo back. He is smart, he has a good relationship with players, he is a good communicator. He develops a good rapport with players and he has good knowledge.”

Hasler would have triggered an extension with a top-six finish this season but Manly lost their final seven games to finish 11th in the wake of the pride jersey saga.

Reports suggest Hasler’s future at Manly was over after he placed blame on the club’s management during the pride jersey media conference.

Peace talks were held between Hasler, owner Scott Penn and chief executive Tony Mestrov last month but a long-term solution wasn’t found.

According to the SMH, Manly powerbrokers are considering introducing Seibold as assistant next season before he takes up the head coach role in 2024.

Seibold‘s ‘PowerPoint coaching’ is reportedly aligned with Penn’s philosophy and his friend, Broncos boss Karl Morris was reportedly one of Seibold’ biggest admirers during his time in Brisbane.

As it stands, the Sea Eagles are reportedly investigating the former Rabbitohs coach’s life as a whole after an ugly period with the Broncos.

Seibold was overwhelmed with his role at Red Hill after leading the Rabbitohs to a third-placed finish in 2018.

Another issue faced by the Sea Eagles is Seibold’s agent Isaac Moses.

Moses manages around 100 NRL players and whenever he manages a coach at a club, a number of his players often land there.

Knights coach Adam O’Brien is managed by Moses, and there are seven players in the Newcastle squad managed by him.
