The ‘Conrod River’ strikes: Teen’s staggering near-roll in Bathurst brutality

It’s one of the craziest crashes of the year, not just this wild weekend at Mount Panorama.

The torrential rain around the mountain has caused chaos all week in the build-up to the Bathurst 1000. But torrents of water streaming across the iconic track were at their worst on Saturday afternoon as the Toyota 86s competed in their second race of the weekend.

A three-car crash on the opening corner wrecked one vehicle and brought out a yellow flag. But after it was towed back to the pits and the safety car departed the track, a couple of laps later the chaos went to an extreme new level.

Screaming down Conrod Straight, Bradi Owen lost his line after the kink and slid off the track at The Chase, coming to rest in the deep, soaked sand. 19-year-old Alex Hadden (also an apprentice mechanic) soon found himself sliding backwards and sideways towards his teammate.

Hadden was on the verge of rolling completely before slamming into the prone Owen, ending up with his car on its side.

Luckily, he was able to climb up and out of the car.
