The Sharks have been fined $5000 over an incident where a trainer ran next to Raiders halfback Jamal Fogarty as he attempted a crucial conversion attempt.
The NRL has issued Cronulla a breach notice for the actions of trainer Daniel Holdsworth during the club’s win over Canberra at PointsBet Stadium on March 31.
Holdsworth was seen running past Fogarty as he moved in for a sideline attempt with the Raiders trailing by eight points with a little over seven minutes left. The kick cannoned into an upright and missed.
The incident was detailed in the NRL ground manager’s report on the night and the governing body discussed it during the weekly end-of-round football meeting.
According to sources speaking on the condition of anonymity because the matter is yet to be finalised, the NRL has handed the Sharks a breach notice proposing a $5000 fine.
The Sharks have been advised of their right of appeal.
This masthead is not suggesting Holdsworth deliberately ran through Fogarty’s line of sight.
The game has taken a stricter stance in recent years against trainers spending excessive amounts of time on the field.
It fined the Eels after trainer and assistant coach Steve Murphy sprinted across the front of the uprights as Penrith star Nathan Cleary took a conversion attempt during a match in 2022.
The NRL recommended a $5000 fine for the Eels and warned all clubs.
There is no suggestion Murphy ran in front of the goalposts to intentionally distract Cleary.
The Sharks fought back from 18-0 down to beat the Raiders on Easter Sunday before having the bye last week.
They will take on the struggling Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium on Saturday night,
