End of an era: Holden’s last hurrah as Chaz attempts to spoil SVG’s party before big Ford move

End of an era: Holden’s last hurrah as Chaz attempts to spoil SVG’s party before big Ford move

Get your tissues out, this week’s Great Race will be unlike any other before it.

Fifty-three years after a Holden car won its first race, the proud manufacturing car will have its last spin as the Commodore prepares to make way for the GM Camaro as the Gen3 era prepares to hit the front line.

It means that it will be the last time Holden takes on Ford at Mount Panorama. Say it ain’t so.

Defending Bathurst champion Chaz Mostert will be partnered by new co-driver Fabian Coulthard for Walkinshaw Andretti United.

It will be WAU’s final Bathurst 1000 competing under the Holden banner before the famous former Holden Racing Team squad switches to Ford in 2023.

Mostert is one of the favourites and the 28 cars that start on the grid – 19 Commodore, nine Ford – will be chasing the Championship leader Shane van Gisbergen – the 2020 Bathurst winner – who will once again be partnered by Garth Tander.

Cameron Waters, meanwhile, is hoping it will be third time lucky after finishing runner-up in the past two Grace Races.

Will Davison is another in good form who will be a part of this week’s big four.

All the attention is on Holden though, having first won in 1969.

The great Peter Brock’s nine victories at Bathurst all came in a Holden.
