There are two deals that will play a big part in the rest of the trade period, and they are linked: Luke Jackson away from Melbourne, and Brodie Grundy to Melbourne.

In Monday’s trade period special of the Real Footy podcast, Michael Gleeson and Jake Niall wrap the first day of action and discuss what it will take to get Grundy to the Demons, how it’s connected to the Jackson trade, and what Fremantle will have to give up.

McDonald-Tipungwuti to come back?

A very interesting development has arisen with retired Essendon star Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti contemplating a comeback, according to Bombers legend Matthew Lloyd.

But here’s the twist in the tale – Lloyd told AFL Trade Radio that Fremantle are leading the race for McDonald-Tipungwuti if the Bombers fan favourite decides to return to the AFL.

Essendon are obviously also keen to regain the brilliant small forward under new coach Brad Scott, but Lloyd said a change in environment over in WA could be the thing that sways him.

The Bombers desperately missed McDonald-Tipungwuti’s impact and pressure up forward this year, but will hopefully be able to address that when they recruit the Davey twins, Alwyn jnr and Jayden, in the draft under the father-son rule.

McDonald-Tipungwuti, who turns 30 in April, played 126 games and kicked 153 goals in his seven years at the Bombers.

Hunt joins West Coast

For those who missed it yesterday, the late player movement saw dashing Melbourne defender Jayden Hunt join West Coast as an unrestricted free agent. The Demons received pick 52 in return as compensation from the AFL.

‘We have knocked back better’: Roos want more for Horne-Francis

By Jon Pierik and Jake Niall

Port Adelaide are prepared to give up pick No.8 and a future first-round selection for Jason Horne-Francis, but North Melbourne are chasing a greater bounty for the former No.1 draft selection.

Horne-Francis, 19, was the first bombshell of trade week, the top pick in last year’s national draft asking to be dealt home to South Australia, in particular to the Power, where he has personal and family history.

The Power have selection No.8 in next month’s draft and a future first-round selection to offer in exchange for the robust midfielder-forward, but the Kangaroos are also looking to bring in a suitable player and are mindful that Port’s future first-rounder could be a later selection if the Power climb the ladder next year.

Bowes to go on grand tour before making call on future

By Michael Gleeson, Jake Niall and Jon Pierik

Gold Coast Suns midfielder Jack Bowes will tour Essendon, Hawthorn and Geelong on Tuesday and then make a call on where he wants to play in 2023.

Bowes is being sought by the three Victorian clubs, who are eager not only to secure the midfielder, but especially to land Gold Coast’s pick No.7, which is on offer due to the Suns wishing to lose Bowes’ hefty two-year contract and create room for future acquisitions and retention.

Geelong, who are seeking to trade for Tanner Bruhn from the Giants and Ollie Henry from Collingwood – both second-year players from the Geelong area – have made a strong pitch to Bowes and, remarkably, the premiers have the cap space to accommodate the salary cap dump.

Grundy to take pay cut when he signs with Demons

By Jake Niall and Michael Gleeson

Collingwood’s All-Australian ruckman Brodie Grundy has signalled that he will take a pay cut when he becomes a Melbourne player in the coming days.

Sources with a knowledge of the talks between the Grundy camp, Collingwood and Melbourne said Grundy would accept a small reduction, probably annually, over the remaining five years of the contract he signed with the Magpies, who will also pay a portion of the contract.

Collingwood want a pick inside 25 for the 2018-19 All-Australian.

Good morning

By Ronny Lerner

Hello everyone and welcome to our rolling coverage of the second day of the 2022 AFL trade period.

There were plenty of big developing storylines on day one, most notably the Jason Horne-Francis situation, and a couple of player movements as well.

Former GWS duo Tim Taranto and Bobby Hill both made their way to Richmond and Collingwood, respectively, while Melbourne defender Jayden Hunt became an Eagle.

And with the likes of Brodie Grundy, Luke Jackson, Josh Dunkley, Rory Lobb, Jacob Hopper and Izak Rankine all still looking to get to new destinations, there is still plenty of drama left in this trade period.

Which players will find new homes today? Stay tuned to this blog throughout the day to find out!
