41yo F1 great leaves commentators in shock with radio call after insane mid-race move

41-year-old Fernando Alonso is a two-time Formula 1 champion, and the legend was happy to show off his skills in a stunning moment at the Miami Grand Prix.

Alonso guided his Aston Martin to third, his fourth podium in five races, in what was at times a lonely race for the Spaniard.

He finished around 20 seconds behind second-placed Sergio Perez, such was the dominance of the Red Bulls, and eight seconds in front of fourth-placed George Russell in the Mercedes.

So it perhaps wasn’t surprising that the veteran kept himself interested in the action by watching TV mid-race. Yep, even when racing at 300km/h.

With around ten laps to go, Alonso’s Canadian teammate Lance Stroll got past Alex Albon in the Williams.

Then Alonso chimed in on team radio, saying: “Which position is Lance? Great move into Turn 1.”

Commentators were stunned, with David Croft exclaiming: “How does he know!?”

Martin Brundle replied that Alonso must have seen it happen on a big screen trackside, adding: “He’s showing off there, isn’t he?”

Brundle added after the race: “That’s still one of my moments of the race, that he had enough time to watch his teammate pull off the overtake, and figured out it was turn one.”

Alonso said afterwards: “I had a very lonely race, nothing to do in front of us with the Red Bulls, but also quite a big margin behind.

“It depends on the circuit, but here out of Turn 11 there’s a big TV screen here so I was watching the race a little bit!

“I saw some movement from Lance on turn one. I did enjoy that – but I didn’t know which position he was fighting for.”

The absolute minimum drivers take Turn 11 is 90 km/h, meaning the Spaniard was accelerating well beyond that speed at the time he was watching TV.
